"Love Sensation" is one of the most sampled and remixed tracks ever in dance music, forming the basis of "Ride on Time" and tons of other tracks that are in their own right, classics. (If you've never heard either song, you probably recognize it best from "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark)

But the original song does not deserve to be forgotten in the way that I feel it has. This is a classic disco showstopper that shows Holloway at the peak of her vocal abilities, giving one of the definitive belting diva performances of all time. Her voice and the aggressiveness of this performance was one of the things that inspired this record, simply hearing this song and believing it should be accompanied by some loud guitars.

The song was written by Dan Hartman, a name long forgotten, worked behind the scenes as a writer and producer, and he was a star in his own right, including on a few disco songs like "Relight My Fire." (You may know his hit from the eighties "I Can Dream About You.") After "Love Sensation" was illegally used by Black Box as the basis for "Ride on Time", Hartman was able to get co-writing credit on the song thanks to his legal team. (Interestingly it appears as though Holloway and Hartman had separate legal teams act on this.)

Hartman was a closeted gay man for his entire life. His New York Times obituary from 1994 notes that he died of a brain tumor. It does not remark that the brain tumor was related to AIDS. Holloway passed in 2011 at the age of 64 from heart failure. This cover is a tribute to both of them.

What the intensity of all great dance love songs imply to the listener that ballads simply cannot is the intensity of feeling that comes from being close to someone, the excitement, the anxiousness, even the mild amount of discomfort that that can bring. Dan Hartman's lyrics capture that perfectly.
